Just wondering how much will it actually cost to buy a plot of land in a darker sky area of Malaysia (read rural) then build a simple building to house scopes with observatory roof. After all if land is cheap and the construction kept simple... Hmmm......
Of course security will be an issue though. Sigh!

I think Malaysia has some rules on foreign ownership of property.. it has to be at least 400K ringgit which is like 180K SGD. Not something you'd just throw over for kicks.
But that said... it should be workable. Build your shed with roll-on / roll-off, put in a pier and bolts. But don't leave your scope there, just bring it along every visit and bolt it in.
I think the whole thievery bit is over-rated. Malaysia is more prosperous than the Philippines, and yet, in the barrios in the Philippines (what you call a "kampung") you could build an observatory and your stuff wouldn't be stolen if you took some elementary precautions. My parents live in such a barrio and for many years had no iron bars on their windows (just glass) and no break-ins. Of course they lived in the house..
