Can an earth based telescope really resolve a 240km diameter object at the distance of Pluto (even at its closest approach?) well enough to differentiate its nature?

Hoax. http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread644342/pg1

No, cannot. Even larger-than-Pluto KBO's like Quaor are barely imaged as more than one pixel by Hubble. And that's 2000+ km object.

Goodness. That looks more like a science fiction website.
In anycase, techniques exist to detect objects that small but only if the conditions are right. example, its influence on a bigger object. High reflective surface makes it behave like a spotlight or occultation of a star, etc.

Airconvent --> True but then those techniques can't tell a spaceship from an asteroid :) And definitely not if the beam cannons are extended in firing position!

Yes but in reality, if you see an object, chances are they are comets or KBOs. An alien vessel would be much unlikely.. [smilie=cute.gif]
But of course, we can send the Enterprise to check it out. At Warp 1, they will make it to Pluto in several hours. [smilie=cool.gif]
