Post by Gary »

Public Stargazing sessions during Earth Hour tonight:

(1) Woodlands Waterfront organised by Woodlands YEC Astronomy and AGASTRO (till 10 pm)

(2) East Coast Park carpark C4 area overnight session by Marine Parade Astronomy Club (MPASTRO)

(3) Wisma Atria roof top garden (free, open to public, till 10pm)

********************************************************

Earth Hour 2011. Saturday 26 March 2011. 8.30pm - 9.30pm.

Orchard Road to play a big part in upcoming Earth Hour

In addition to Orchard Road, any good recommendations for observing sites in Singapore during the upcoming Earth Hour for sidewalk astronomy purposes?

Will MBS be supporting this event? I consider heavy duty spotlights unessential lighting. [smilie=lol2.gif]

Miranda Kerr is super hot btw. [smilie=embarrassed.gif]

Hi! Woodlands YEC's astro wing and AGAstro will be having an Earth Hour event at Woodlands Waterfront. There will be scopes set up to let the public view the skies from early evening to about 10pm.

For those who are coming via public transport, there will be a charter bus service from Woodlands MRT. I'll update this post with details once the schedule is confirmed.

Do come and join us! :)

@Siren: Thanks for the heads up! Fantastic news. Will the jetty lights be switched off for an hour on that day?

@Tim: You can enjoy 2 of your hobbies on the same evening at Woodlands Waterfront! Stargazing and fishing. :)

@Cloud: Miranda Kerr is the global ambassador for Earth Hour 2011. (And a Victoria's Secret Angels :))

Hey Gary, the spotlight will be off. We're in the midst of *convincing* NParks to allow us to turn off the street lights in the park. Jetty lights and playground lights will not be turned off because of safety reasons. Sad to say NParks are not very supportive of us turning off or even dimming the lights. They're very afraid that there will be problems with safety.

I don't foresee the area to be very dark. The main purpose of having scopes set up is to tell the public that going out of their homes to gaze at the stars can be a nice and meaningful way of spending Earth Hour. I guess they will be wow-ed by the moon that night as they always will be.

If any astronomers here are going, do have a chat with the public about light pollution in Singapore. We will have exhibits that can help to educate the public. :) If you guys are interested in setting up your own scope, drop us a mail at contactus@woodlandsyec.org.sg to let us know!

Or else you guys can just come for the flea market and the free movie screening. :D

Hi Siren. Thanks for the update. Good luck in your convincing. Moon will only rise about 34 mins after midnight on that day but Saturn should be reasonably high enough to wow the crowd before the event officially ends at 10pm.

Sounds great guys. Don't give up.
I am not in country during that period but that place should be good to attract some newbies. [smilie=cute.gif]

Hey guys, thanks for the heads up.

The event details are up at: http://tinyurl.com/WoodlandsEarthHour

We hope you guys can come down and support us! We've supported WWF's event at Esplanade last year by setting up scopes and letting the public see the skies through their eyes. (corny hahaha) The reaction that we get from the public is always positive and it feels good to be able to let the general public see what we see in this hobby.

Since I'm so corny, might as well.

WILL EARTH'S DARKEST HOUR ALSO BE OUR BRIGHTEST? [smilie=cheer.gif]

Haha. If you are going down to set up your scope and need any help, you can grab any one of the volunteers wearing a bright green polo-tee and ask for Fann. That's me.
