Sun in Oct 12

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Sun in Oct 12

Post by yltansg »

I heard that the Sun emitted a flare yesterday from the magnetic field near Sunspot 1582. Here is 1582 taken from YukTong Ave. Enjoy :)

The sky has been cloudy and hazy lately. Found a small window of blue skies today at about 11 am. Saw a large bright active region - I think it is Sunspot 1589. It poses a threat for M-Class solar flare. M-class flares are medium-sized; they can cause brief radio blackouts that affect Earth's polar regions. Minor radiation storms sometimes follow an M-class flare (Reference http://www.spaceweather.com).

And zooming in on the active region - unfortunately seeing condition was poor.

Hi,Alfred
Yes,this region shows itself as 'a swarm of ants' type of sunspot.in white light;no flare though. The constant change of shape makes it very interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mr Chia,

'a swarm of ants' type of sunspot - that is a very apt description of the sunspot :)

You are right that there was no flare. Sunspot 1589 has move past the middle of the Sun disk. Earth-directed flare is now even less.

I look forward to seeing your pictures :)

Hi,Alfred
I will be posting the photos after it get rotated to the other side of the sun;meanwhile I am studying its Ha,Cak and white light profile and see how its different from other sunspots.By the way, that spot 1589 is decaying fast but in spite of that, its spot are still 'ants' like.Thanks.

Sunspot 1598 (at 11 O'clock position) was the centre of attraction today. It emitted a strong X1-Class solar flare at 1300hrs
