Re: Venus Transit events in Singapore - 6 Jun 2012 (Wed morn
Sky & Telescope has compiled a list of websites where the transit will be broadcast online:
http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observin ... 13475.html
The online sites would be particularly useful to watch the ingress (entry) of the disc of Venus into the Sun, since that would happen about an hour before sunrise in Singapore.
And it would also be useful if it's very cloudy here, and for those of us who can't take leave from work that morning.
I think the best bet would be NASA EDGE's live webcast from atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii, since it's very likely to be cloud-free and it lies within the "entire transit visible" zone:
http://sunearthday.gsfc.nasa.gov/webcasts/nasatv/
http://www.ustream.tv/nasaedge
Note: The transit times will differ slightly when viewed from different locations on Earth. From atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii, these times will be, in terms of Singapore time: ingress exterior 06:10:09am, ingress interior 06:27:40am,
transit centre 09:26:15am, egress interior 12:26:39pm, egress exterior 12:44:31pm. For the transit times when viewed directly from Singapore, pls see my earlier post in this thread; as you can see the transit times are later by a few minutes when viewed directly from Singapore. From these time differences, one could calculate the distance to the Sun by parallex calculations:
http://transitofvenus.nl/wp/getting-inv ... -distance/
And for those who wish to make some contributions to science, you could download this phone app (for iPhone and Android) and submit your Venus egress (exit) times when viewed directly from Singapore:

I can't seem to get the Sun totally in focus with my Tamron lens at 270mm with a 1.4x converter because the inifinity setting does not have a click stop to it. Tried taking several test shots and adjustments doesn't seem to yied a picture with clearly defined sun spots. Any tips?

Try using live view to zoom in on the sunspots and focus? Hope that helps...

Battle ready! Though still waiting for the glue to dry off....

Test shot with the camera. Tweaked contrast and brightness.
