You are not using rechargeable NiMH batteries right? Get a 12V power supply or fresh alkaline batteries.

Yes. I've balanced it as best as I can by securing the pivoting point to around the centre of gravity. I am looking fir a good power source but I'll try with fresh batteries again in the meantime. Thanks.

Hi all,

A quick update as I just spoke to Albert at Astro Scientific. The issue according to him is the power as the GOTO function consumes more power than the alignment function and "fresh" batteries are usually not fully juiced, hence the issues I'm facing.

Anyone can recommend a good and cheaper-than-celestron-powertank option?

Appreciate all the suggestions and insights in helping a noob. [smilie=beg.gif]

Well by right a fresh set of alkaline batteries will do the job cos' both the current 6SE I own and an older one worked fine. Nonetheless, try either a universal adapter (centre pin positive) or a dry gel battery you can purchase at Sim Lim Tower.

Batteries should not be that big and issue, otherwise there will be alot of complaints from users. But just in case, have you tried putting in Energizer Lithium batteries ? They are as strong as they get. A Gel battery will help of course but if you bought brand new, it should work well with AA batteries too.

I've been using normal Energizer batts, not the lithium version.

go dowm to simlimtower basement, there are a few shops selling yuasa batteries, get a 12V 7AH Sealed Lead Acid battery. Go to the nearby store to buy the correct plug and ask the fella from the battery store to connect them for you (they do it for free), then buy the charger from them, ask them to modify the charger plug so it can mate with the plug you bought and connected to the battery.

The Gel batteries would solve a great deal power problem but the issue remains that a brand new scope should be able to be operated from AA batteries as designed. This gives the flexibility to use batteries for short 8-10 hr sessions when you don't need a gel battery capacity. In anycase, if the scope was bought from overseas , then that can't be helped but at least Mariner should email Celestron and see if they can recommend any functional/faulty isolation test to confirm if its normal.

Well, I got my scope from Astro Scientific and that was the explanation Albert gave to me. Hopefully can get a decent power pack when I go shopping this weekend.

Based on my own experience with Nexstar mounts his explanation does not sound convincing at all. Maybe you should return the scope to get him to sort it out. Alternatively, I can help you out; PM me.
