I also received the promotion. I am eyeing at the fs144eq short since the price is so attractive and also with the free bino. Can anyone give comments on this scope? btw, I am a beginner...

IMHO, Don't get this scope!!! I think the long tube version will be a better choice. Look at the specification: Focal Length: 1000mm f/9. There only one way that a long focal length scope can be in a short tube... that is there is a 2x barlow len built-in the focuser. That mean, the primary mirror is actually a 4.5" f4.5 and I don't think it is using a parabolic mirror. For such a fast scope, you need a parabolic mirror.

BUT, the scope will give you nice low power views with a large TFOV, like M45.

Also, a lot of coma.

dude, the advanced C6N is it the tube only or the Advanced Series CG5-GT mount with a 6" reflector? If it's a whole package, 990 is a good buy!

Yes, becos it is a spherical mirror, thats why they have to include the 2x barlow built in lens. That means 2 things:

1. EXTREMELY HARD TO COLLIMATE

2.Optics not that fantastic, you cant expect much with a built in barlow

Totally agreed, dont get this newt(which is also the Nexstar 114 GT). Collimation is an ordeal and it is very frustrating. I tot it was an OK scope which had a wide TFOV

Hmm, that means Celestron Firstscope 114 EQ will be better? it is more expensive...

I just received the paper yesterday, i don't need it and you can have it! But just to let u know, i've confirm with Astro Science that FS 114 EQ mount is the normal type and not CG-4.
FYI, I intend to sell my scope FS114 HD with CG-4 mount, will be posting details soon.

Yes... the First Scope 114 EQ come with CG-3 EQ mount.
