Views of C5

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Favourite scope: Mag1 Instruments 12.5" Portaball

Post by acc »

Hi Rich... ya lor.... That's because u always seem to be on the upgrade to a larger scope, but will somehow eventually end up with yet another small-aperture scope... :?

Anyway, I support ur insistence for a GOTO, for it makes star-gazing so much more effortless and easy. To each his own I guess... :) [One exception is the Portaball with is its amazing ease of motion, which takes the pain out of a manual mount. I would not want to wrestle with the size and weight of an equatorial mount for visual observations... :) ]

Anyway, I really think you should just keep an eye out for an N8 in the used market. Astromart prices are quite reasonable and I am sure u will eventually find someone willing to ship to Singapore.

Buying the C5 now will only sap the $$ (and who has enough of these?) and delay your eventual acqusition of an 8". The improvement over the 105 will be only marginal. And my crystal ball says that not long after getting the C5, will you want to sell it and then will be in the nice situation of trying to find a buyer willing to pay a fair price for it.... And history will repeat itself when you find an N8 for a good deal but can't buy it cos' the ministry of finance doesn't allow you to have a C5 AND buy a N8....

PHew... Ok.... that's all I got to say about ur scope buying adventure.... Really... :)

As for CSN, well I am looking forward to return to more observing sessions in Sg and M'sia too :)

cheers

Save some money by skipping this (marginal) incremental upgrade from ur ETX90/ETX105/Orion 80ED cos' very soon the itch for an 8" will return....

Dun let history repeat itself leh... U have bought and sold so many small scopes already!!!! Be a man and get an 8-incher!! :D
hi cc...you've been quiet all this while but the moment we talk about my scope choices, you sure to join in!
seems like since day 1 of this hobby, you have been pestering me to upgrade the aperture...my ETX105 is the result of you getting me to stop the purchase of the ETX90 and upgrade..heh heh

currently, I have a super duper portable , a midrange goto and an excellent quality wideview apo refractor. that would have covered most needs but now,

here's my intention:

I'm looking to upgrade the 90mm portable to a 127mm portable. both the etx90 and the c5 will fit my video camcorder bag perfectly but the C5 will offer more aperture..for that lazy short trip to my multistorey car park on a clear night. c5 is also the biggest scope that will fit on the 410 head properly...

My etx goto has worked flawlessly after I fixed the earlier motor problem. And I have to insist GOTO is IMPORTANT as far as I'm concerned. I cannot imagine myself having a productive night without it. For serious observing...But of course, having compared the ring nebula between the N8GPS and the ETX105, I have to agree the 362% increase in aperture MAKES the difference! But I am also painfully aware of size and portability , nto against my car but against myself...I settled for the N8 as it has a single forkarm and is the lightest and most portable 8" goto around. ..Manual star hopping I can slowly learn but I want my objects NOW!!
too bad so far the only good offers will only ship to the US ...

The refractor is another scope I loved to use. Had wanted to sell it to finance a Dob such as the Perseid Dob. The scope works beautifully ifor wide views but being a dolt with star hopping there is only so many objects I can see in one night by myself....so far have not received any motivational offers, so I'll keep the option open for now...alternative is the brush up on my star hopping (right fizzy123??).

btw, this is unrelated but I sure miss CC and his CSNs....Hope he comes back soon !
:D
Dun get the N8...get the N8i. The N8 has a few software bugs in there.

Also, if shipping is expensive, why dun consider Vpost? Their shipping is quite reasonable.

I agree with CC....you should stop playing with small scopes. Look around, those who have no cars are owning bigger scopes than you. So I really dun understand what's the problem with a 8' when you have 4 wheels to bring them around. Even an 8" with a EQ mount shouldn't be a problem if you have a car. Heck, even a 12" shouldn't be a problem.
