Another travel alternative is a small/big binoculars combo. I have tried using the Nikon Monarch 10x42 DCF and Pentax 20x60 PCF WP II. Both are light enough for viewing DSOs without bringing a tripod or other accessories, yet gives you a low power wide field & higher power close-up view option. And both bino takes up less space than a travel scope/tripod/accessories package.
Alternatively, anyone interested to rent out his "girlfriend" or "wife" for a fee to go with me on my trips?
Anyone???
I'm for rent if anyone's girlfriend or wife needs company!
8-)

Or try my AstroLite, an 18" 'grab-and-go' (I was going to call it PortaLite but it sounds like a torchlight or a toilet! Heh..).
Design is still underway and patent will be applied before more details are released (but don't hold your breath - the mirrors *hint* need 2 years to make and the electronics another further 3 years to calibrate and test).
Cheers!

If you get an 18" you have to upgrade your car to a MPV. Also, you need to employ a few people to help you carry around the things and do the setup and tear down. Perhaps give them training so that they can do the setup/tear down in the dark and within 5 mins; like strip rifle and assemble rifle in the army. That would be sure grab and go as you won't be doing the work.
Rlow, How's the pentax bino? Are you able to hold it steady at the 20x magnification?
Enough resolution to split Alpha Centauri into two; good enough to observe Jewel Box, Omega Centauri etc even when handheld while standing. Using braced elbow support is better, as I can see the two main equatorial belts of Jupiter! Just got it yesterday, and I plan to test it on a recce trip this weekend.
Cool. Looks like this is real grab and go! Anyway, this Saturday from the looks of it would good weather unlike last Saturday. If only the weather was like that last Saturday. Well, wish you guys good luck in the recce and that you guys can find a place nearer to Singapore with as good skies as Mersing.
