i think it has more to do with wanting to know the relationship btw human beings and the universe and our place in it..
its like close to religious feeling..
we wont get any answer by taking up astronomy..
but at least we are doing sth actively to explore our world and understand it..

I guess different ppl have different views when watching the night sky..
Christians or Muslims may think of the omnipotent God of purpose who created this universe and human beings out of good will and love.
But the night sky is scary for the aethiest.. human beings thrown into one corner of the universe and left on our own and with no purpose.. like some disowned orphan..
how do you feel about it?? filled with wonder or dread??

As someone who is still a newbie after all these years, I can safely say its a hobby that you must enjoy. If that is so, then naturally, you will read all articles you can find, read any magazine available and each time you go out, you will look up to see if the sky is clear. If you have that "foundation", the rest is easier. Scopes are abound in singastro. there's always our vendors and of course, the science centre astro shop.
there are plentiful obs sessions for you to join in and learn in practice.
Observers have all developed a habit of talking shop when the sky is cloudy. For those trips in mersing when cloudy cover is bad, everyone would be in their foldable chairs talking about all things astronomy...heh heh

btw, if learning is still a pain, there's always the goto scope!
