New Product announcements from Canon

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Such a large file for astrophotography is very demanding on the computer. Image it may take one day to process 10 images for calibration and stacking?

actually Kochu has made a valid point and holds very true....one of the 'drawbacks' with high megapixel chips is that the imager has to be prepared for HUGE storage space, very much like the avid planetary imager with several gigabytes of data for each session. Of course, one would need to think about memory and clock speeds as well for processing, and since much have been invested in the equipment, a good display is critical else it might not make much sense investing on the rest and processing on a mediocre monitor!

I think very high end camera is good for single shot still pic. For astro, the stacking software can help to improve the resolution, so MP can come from the software instead of hardware. IMO, what is more important for astro is low noise over MP, but then the MP can't be too low. High MP, hundreds of shots for one astro pic will need a multi-processor system to do the job. So, invest in a S$15k camera will end up investing another may be S$100k or more for the high end system to do the processing unless you don't mind to take a few days to process a pic.

Well, high MP allows covering of big objects without making mosaics and still get the resolution of smaller sensor cameras. (Assuming the pixel size is the same and the field is fully illuminated for the high MP)

To get a telescope that can fully illuminate high MP sensors, it will be expensive!

Don't worry.... technology "fly" and price will drop real fast.... :D

Hmm... but High MP sensors doesn't mean large chip size...

Have a nice day.
