dark sky

Post by michael »

You all don’t laugh. Now I tell u, in front of my house got car park + HDB (full of light), back side got car park and HDB, right side is school Light, there light is about 30 pcs giant ball glass light in one line. Only I can see 180 deg to 210 deg in my place. This is the sky only left for me. Now come to the point, if I go little bit far away, I can see more batter but there is Golf practicing field and still too bright for DSO, I even saw at 4am, there lights are still on and it is very bright. I know large optics is batter for light polluted place. U can see only some of DSO but worst then we suppose to see. If u use 4 inch, u don’t need to see any fine DSO, only can see fuzzy obj or don’t. I am using C8 and 10 inch to watch.

Soon may be will make a large telescope…but still thinking for make folding type so I can bring it to
Little bit Far jungle inside, beside the canal…there is a fantastic place for DSO…I find it is nice place for astronomy. Now all I need to carry the telescope….to there. So need big wheel type of trolley...

Still thinking how can I build light and large optics Telescope. Do u have any idea?

I think the best way is to get a smaller scope and get away from the immediate light pollution (if there is no way of reducing or avoiding them). There are some places darker in Singapore that allows some DSO viewing; eg. East Coast, Lim Chu Kang etc. If there is too strong light shining at your scope or immediate surrounding, it can be very hard to get dark adapted or one may not even get dark adapted. Worse still is the reflected light from the eyepieces, telescopes etc that will just spoil the image. I observe from my house with 5 street lights shining into the garden and sometimes with another bright light from my neighbour's house and I do this by having my telescope well flocked, eyepieces with eyeguards (I prefer not to observe with glasses as the glasses will reflect the light too) and a black T-shirt on my head (when needed). Also, try to hide behind trees to reduce the amount of stray light.

Hmmm, true, I agree totally that having a very good portable visual system that allows you to travel to the dark skies will surely let you enjoy astro a lot more.

My 80 FD has cleared 1/3 of Messier's list in just one night in Mersing. Nice.
