The manfrotto 410 is a geared head that allows for smooth slow motion tracking at high magnifications.
The manfrotto setup will set you back $300+ (head ~200 + tripod ~100). You can search the forums for more information.
If you don't want the slow motion controls, you can go for a sturdily built ordinary photo tripod, which is what I use.
