Pleiades or Seven Sisters (M45) Open Star Cluster

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

I thought diffraction spikes ususally start to happen after you stop down well above f/11. f/8 seems rather wide for these spikes. Odd.

kevin

i've seen diffraction spikes even at f/3.2 (on an f/2.8 lens). really depends on the configuration of the iris.. if there are any "sharp" corners on the iris, you'll get spikes.

Well, I heard that the traditional way of creating spikes in astrophotos for people that are using refractors, they usually paste 2 pieces of thread infront of their object lens, to create the spike effect. For newtonians, there isnt a need as the spikes are created by the spider vanes

Strangely, while some ppl like spikes, some ppl really don't like them and consider them as flaws in their pictures

Hi,
I also like spikes... My R200SS Newtonian got very thick secondary spider, but the diffraction spikes generated is very thin and look very nice... but the spikes here is a bit too "thick"... look like starfish leh.... [smilie=crying3.gif]

Anyway, I think I'll shoot at F5.6 and use the thread trick next time... [smilie=cheer.gif]

Have a nice day.

Hehehe, there's always something called Cross Screen filters (or star-six and star-eight). :P

http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/oef-03.html <-- I bought the cross screen filter myself, got it cheap at $25 off ClubSNAP. Hehe.

Weixing, when are you going to take your next shot at this? Maybe I can drop by Tampines with my 7D. Hehehe.

I kinda like variable spikes....large spikes on the larger stars and smaller ones on smaller stars! But not too many! Thats where PS layers and layer mask come in handy,...hehe!
I read somewhere where someone used his daughters hair and taped them in a cross on a lens hood! Hmmm...where are my daughters!! HAHA!
My wife never complained about how much time, effort & money I spent on my Astronomy hobby!................suddenly I met her!!!

Hi weixing nice capture! Spikes look abit weird to me but to each his own i guess!

Each 2 min exposure in post editing you had to process for field rotation in each frame?
