Thanks for the posts!
Many people use Celestron GEM mounts, so there must be a way to do this.

Erric,

I don't think it's impossible and like you...there has to be a way! Just like Wee Ern's GPD2 bolt prob...there had to be a way. I would like to take a look at the CG5 of yours to see what really is possible. We can trouble shoot then.

On the machinist bit...as Orly mentioned...not easy to find one offs. But I am still searching. The guy who did my pier is offshore for several months so won't see him till End May. When he gets back I will ask him for a favor again,...lol.
I'll be in touch with you and probably drop by for a look-see. Let you know.

if a local vendor is selling half pier there will be a significant markup,

get the orion 16" SVP pier and have it shipped. shipping will cost about $60-$80.

There are not many GEM users here in tropical countries, especially in the range of +-2 degrees of latitude. I made this hypothesis based on the considerations of GEM manufacturers. If not mistaken, Takahashi is one of the few companies that offers GEM which works directly in our latitudes.

By the way, you guys can contact Mr. Khoo Hua Seng at +60351247260 or xtrotech@streamyx.com Calling him directly is recommended. If you need his handphone number, please pm me. His office is at Shah Alam, Selangor.

He doesn't have any existing design with him now. It would be great if you can draw it in CAD.
For your reference. It may cost you less to have it done in Malaysia and save some carbon emission too.
Clear skies,
Robin.

Robin -- so the guy whose contact info you posted is what you refer to?

the SVP is $80 (USD) or about $110 SGD, + $60 SGD forwarding is only $170. Is your contact even willing to fabricate that for under 400 RM?

I got a quote from a US machinist for a CGEM wedge but he quoted US$ 400. If the Malaysia machinist can do it for much less I'd go for it.

Yes, I know that Mr.Khoo does provide such service. You have to contact him to ask for a quote. I am not sure about the pricing since he said he quotes based on the design, i.e. how complicated it is and the material needed.

A simple pier may be a lot cheaper. Just my own guess. :)

Hi Eric / KKK26.

I have the quote from Astro bargains for the orion 16" SVP pier, which is S$229.

I personally also has a CG5 go-to mount which can only be lowered to around 6 deg .
So the pier is useful, to clear the obstruction, as well as setting the counterweight bar at the side which is a single tripod leg, thus lowering the leg slightly may not cause much stability issue.

Regards
