Which one should i buy

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

if you want to start with a newtonian and dont wish to find yourself upgrade to another scope so fast then either the omni or c6-ngt will be good.

perhap you want to drop by sci ctr to have a glance on their scope on display.
Actually, I did went down to see last week, but nvr hands on. I think a nice guy name Jeffrey attended to me.

The more i see, the more i get poisoned... slowly pushing my budget... lol

Now considering C8-NGT or C6-SGT (side question: why is C6 n C8 priced almost the same on astro.com.sg)

Does anyone from in here owns either one and willing to give a glance of it at the moon?

C8-NGT is newtonian scope while C6-SGT is schemit cassegrain scope. that c8 - ngt will be very long and bulky to bring around.

Thanks all. Think most likely I will invest on C6-SGT.

I do have my own transport, does that solve any portability issue?
It does for most of the part. But if the scope is too bulky and heavy, you may still be discouraged from using it because of the potential hassle of loading it to your car and taking out again after the observation session.

If you can wait, I still feel that you should attend at least 1 starparty/sidewalk session before buying your first scope.

Regarding the 1/3 rule, for those who are married, I think 1/3 of the budget should be spent on appeasing the spouse so you can spend the other 2/3 on your hobby. :P

I'll share a story.

I put my CGEM (mount only) plus counterweight shaft and weights, inside a roller suitcase.

Taking it out of the flat to the elevator is no problem, but on the ground floor, there is a small flight of steps that I need to take the suitcase down to put it in the boot. The mount weighs over 60lb, and I tell you even just that small flight of stairs is a huge problem.

Weather permitting, there is one at Bishan Park 2 and one at Galaxy CC tonight. See events and observation subforum.

Hi Thomas. The galaxy event officially ends at 9.30pm. The queue and wait at SSC may be longer than Galaxy CC. For your trip planning purposes.

I will be at Bishan Park 2 with my 5" MCT and binoviewer. We should be staying quite late as long as the weather holds up. I will be at the McDonalds first, then join Dave and friends at the usual obsite diagonally opposite McDonalds.

A quiet veteran Singastro member may be there with this scope too. :) Have fun observing wherever you intend to observe!

Many years ago when i was doing birding, locally we have to walk about 4km total say at Sungei Buloh. My gear is about 9kg total. Some folks might be up to 15kg or so. A 600mm f4 is 5kg, secondary 70-200 f2.8, 2 bodies, 1 tripod with gimbal, bag, flash+flash extender. Water bottle and maybe food. In Malaysia, treks of 10km is pretty common to get the "good stuff".

You even run with that gear at F1, for those pros.

When i was younger, my wedding gear is 11kg total, day in day out during peak period 4 days in a row, 4-6hours of sleep each day. Finish already go back to regular day job. But then one fine day I overworked myself and landed in hosipital for 5 days so i won't recommend you to try that. :D

Of coz this is a hobby, not a triathlon. :D How to counter that? Easy, body build + cardio.

You finished a 24km march with ~12kg right. Some can finish 36km with 30kg...but those are pros!
Why that time can do that?

That said, my astro gear is relatively light (compared to other setups) but getting old already. 36kg total, but limited to 100m walk. After that hae hae chuan liao....getting old approaching 40s. Sigh...

That said, i'd prefer that you save up and get something bigger. Else it might turn you off with the "That's it?" syndrome with the skies here in SG. Seriously if i have the space and logistics and ob area, i will surely whack 16" minimum. Above 20" it tends to get more ex exponentially. See tourist objects like Carina/Jewelbox/Saturn also more shiok. :D
One of the big plusses if aperture is an issue is with video assisted astronomy. You can check that out on CN.

Before you start off, take your time and read the forums. That said, with 500 bucks, you can definitely enjoy astronomy quite happily with a pair of 20 x 80 binos or 25 x 100 (both 4mm exit pupil, so pretty bright liao) and star hopping around while learning the skies. You have tripod + head?
