Portable Battery Pack such as Celestron PowerTank

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Hi,
Nonono wrong... it works, but wouldnt work at optimal performance.
Actually, alkaline batteries only supply 1.5V during the early stages of their discharge and this drops to below 1.5V for most of their life. Below is a discharge datasheet for NiMH battery (Left) and "ultra" Alkaline battery. Please note that both are from the same manufacturer.

From the diagram, the alkaline battery only sustain 1.5V for only around 1 - 2 hours and then drop below 1.5V for the rest of the discharge time.
of course now with the quick 1hr charger its not an issue but the yuasa gel battery provides more power, stays charged ridiculously long and is fairly portable (I bought the 4AH one instead of the 7AH due to size. actually the 4AH cost more as it is not a standard size!)
Yes... agree. Gel battery (SLA) may be is the best and cheapest rechargeable battery for scope... only a bit bulky.

Anyway, I think we should encourage people to use more rechargeable battery... save money and also save the environment.

Have a nice day.

kohjb wrote:Yup. I too do have the Celestron Power Tank, but I have the NiMHs as backups which are left in the ETX. I know the voltage is not the same spec wise, but the characteristics of alkaline batteries are such that their internal resistance is pretty high, meaning that their voltage drops pretty fast as it gets used. Take a look at this page from Weasner's site. The pertinent info is not so much about the low temp but rather how the voltage drops. The good thing with NiMHs is that their internal resistance is low, so their voltage stays pretty constant, but the problem because of this is that they die suddenly, so you won't get much warning.

I got these Sharp 2500mAh ones, and the Sony fast charger. With 2500mAh, and an average consumption of 200mA, one charge should last about 12 hours. I'll have to admit that I haven't used em much since the skies have been so cloudy. I may have to eat my words

A big plus for me though, is that NiMHs don't LEAK !! I don't know about you guys, but I absolutely hate it when my $XXXX equipment is ruined by those stupid leaky alkalines !!! :violent: I sometimes get a panic attack when I remember that I haven't used my scope for a while and I had left the alkalines in them !! :k-crazy:
Personally, I think the Celestron power bank is an overkill unless you are connecting it to a few goto scopes or you want some sort of heater supply. My 4AH gel battery can last more than a whole night and small and compact. I fully charge it, leave it in the store room for 2-3 months and after taking it out and charging them, it goes back to full charge within 5 min!
NiMH are ok as they dispense with the need for an external battery but problem is I use an adapter plate to connect to my manfrotto tripod and hate to always unscrew the plate each time I need to charge the batteries.
the gel batteries work beautifully. Since I have no batteries in my ETX, I don't worry about leakages. Incidently, if that is a problem, can always put in Eveready Lithium battries, they don't leak...
and yes....my scope has not been seeing much action due to poort weather. in fact, I only powered it twice since I came back from the last mersing trip (was it in July?). Once to oil the gears and run it a few rounds to keep it shipshape as well as update on the autostar software and another time to do some observation my my home multi-storey car park..
i guess alot of people have been disappointed they were unable to join WWF-TO ( Weixing's World Famous Tampines Obseravtion ) due to poor weather this past few weeks.

Looi in KL (official SEA Meade dealer) sent me two battery tanks for my LX200 GPS and ETX a few months ago and they are just as good as the Celestron ones. His price is pretty cheap - a fraction of the price of the Celestron ones.
Call him.

Hi all,

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but I've lost my Powertank and am looking for a power supply solution.

Is this the car battery mentioned earlier in this topic:

However it costs $160, much like a Powertank. Is there a cheaper solution? Thanks.

i think it was mentioned earlier that you could buy a 12v 7ah SLA battery from sim lim tower for 24 bucks or so. and a charger for somewhere 35-40 bucks.

i was looking for a much lighter solution some time ago and i have found my ideal battery pack. a pack of sony low self discharge nimh battery could be gotten rather cheap from cd-rama. 4 AA 2000mah battery and a charger. get 4 packs of those, get your own battery holder from sim lim tower and you could make a simple battery pack that should provide u with roughly 4ah worth of power, more than enough to drive most goto mounts. I had briefly tried out with just 8 of them, it does the job too.

If you are going the AA low self discharge batteries direction, you can consider contacting this vendor (http://www.ardenmktg.com/) they are direct distributors of some brands like sony and sanyo. Eneloops are cheap at S$15(before GST) for a pack of 4 AA or AAA. But min quantity is 5 packs.

I am not from that company but I bought a few times from them.

ohh I was faced with the same problem abt outdoor power supply too.. the power tanks are just too darn expensive. so bought a 12V 12AH SLA battery from simlim tower, grabbed one of those 3 output cigarette lighter adapter from the patrol kiosk and clipped off the original male cigarette lighter head that comes with the adapter. just connect it to the battery leads and walla! since the goto mounts and autoguider now a days comes with the ciggie lighter power option. it could power up the autoguider and goto for a lonng time and ontop of that. the adaptor comes with a 5v regulated usb output too! so u could power your mount, autoguider and charge Iphone using the 12ah battery!

SimLim Square has a shop in the inner corridors,...can't remember if it was 2nd or 3rd...small shop selling nothing but batteries!! They carry the affordable Unicell 12V different Ah. They also carry the chargers. I picked up a 12V 12ah SLA Unicell battery & a charger that charges this and the lower Ah batteries as well (smaller charges can't charge the higher Ah cells). Then opposite the battery shop, is another selling battery connectors for ciggy lighters, croc clips, blk & red cables etc etc! So ran there to grab the croc clip cables and connectors with the correct size jack to fit my IOptron GotoNova socket...all in all approx SG$50 (give or take more or less).

Just make sure when you charge the SLA, that no one can knock into it or it's near anything flammable, as the charger uses croc clips which can be knocked off (and possibly crossing causing a 'short'). Just playing it safe! Charger has lights to show 'red' charge status and 'green' full charge/trickle.

And then you just have to get a small 'tupperware', line it with foam and slip the SLA in! Waterproof and easy to store!! A Full charge can last you thru the nite and then some!!

AstroBargains also sells these Unicell batteries, with the tupperware box. Just get in touch with Joo Beng!! Or visit Sim lim...either way!
Lastly, 'Unicell' has a showroom at Kaki Bukit for those in the East!! Do a google and you can get the address!

Have Fun!!

Edited: Location Sim Lim Square (not Tower...apologies!!)
