Hi all,

A little too late but according to this... ECP lights don't seem to be going off.

Just a token gesture at some places and offices that's all it seems.

It is also a security issue. If the lights in the parks are suddenly turned off, there could be accidents due to cyclists colliding with people/objects or even pedestrians walking into a drain! Snatch thieves could also get away easier in the dark.

Sad but true. Got to agree with you there tachyon. If they did switch off the lights the complaint letters will probably start flooding the Straits Times forum.

In any case, The view from Marina Barrage wasn't dramatic but it was noticeably dimmer.

Clifford, did u get any nice shots of the sky line from Toa Payoh?

I was at Wisma for a star gazing event set up by TASOS. Surprisingly, it was better than SSC's Observatory! Maybe because of Earth Hour lah. The sky at Wisma's sky garden was clearer and darker than SSC.

Here are the pictures, other than distortion correction to "straighten" the building, nothing changed. The specific location is 100% crop from the actual photo (city view).

Pictures taken @ 8:28pm (before) and 8:37pm (after); 24mm, 13 sec exposure, F8, ISO 400, and WB is sodium vapour so NO orange sky grow.

Basically don't see much different, only some switch off the light, most didn't.

NParks certainly is pledging only for the very bare minimum. They don't seem to really want to support this event, from the number of parks they're pledging to turn off the lights..

Even the Toa Payoh Park, as u see from the first 2 pictures in Clifford's photos (bottom left green area) remains as bright as ever.

I don't deny that turning off the lights immediately will cause problems, and a totally dark ECP would be very dangerous. But if they could turn off alternate street lamps, I think that would already have made a heckload of difference.

And small parks like Toa Payoh should definitely be supporting this cause. I don't see anyone in the Parks at night when I walk there on my way home.
Stargazing ... is an excuse to stay up past bedtime that never fails!
