I tried seven times that night but I also did not succeed in observing M51. The surface brightness of this face-on galaxy is low, and acc is correct, that the sky brightness due to the 1st quarter moon probably masked over it. The Whirlpool Galaxy and companion galaxy NGC 5195, can usually be seen in Singapore on clear moonless nights, though the spiral structure is usually only evident through a 12.5" scope in dark skies like at Mersing.Airconvent wrote:

Nope I never did succeed. The sky was probably brighter than the galaxy itself...
