Mountain trekking

Post by harlequin2902 »

Thinking of going on a 4 day mountain trekking package up Mt.Kinabalu sometime in end Sept / early Oct. Any adventurous 'Singastroeans' want to join me ? :)

I wonder what it'll be like to stargaze from 4000+ m above sea level ?
If the trip is confirmed, I will be bringing along the Pronto + Manfrotto setup :D

Those who've actually 'been there, done that' can feel free to share your experiences here too.

Thanks.

Its the highest mountain in South-East Asia. Located in Sabah, East Malaysia.

gone there before... My advice would be to wear adequate clothing coz it can be quite cold at the top... will be a tad under 0 degrees... And the winds will be chilling. Not sure whether u can do observations up there coz most ppl will climb up early in the morning and reach there for sunrise. A little pronto might prove to be quite alot of baggage up there on the mt. coz i witness a person carrying a 35mm SLR camera struggling with its bulkiness especially when negotiating some pretty narrow passages. are u doing it alone or with a guide?

Hi Eric ,

Thanks for sharing. Ok, then maybe I'll settle the mountain first and do my observing elsewhere in the dark lowlands (kingkong :  ) on another night.

It will be a guided trek up to the top.

Which firm's package did you take up the last time ?

woah... can't remember exactly which tour package... Was some years back already... But it included a 2 days treking among the nature parks and some hot spring thingy after the climb to the top... Think its best u do ur obs during the 2 days... Views can be quite fantastic due to the remote location and the darkness of the sky but let me warn u.. it could be quite windy, wet, and cloudy on some days... And when the cloud comes, its rain clouds... so completely nothing to see...

Ok, noted. I'm shelving my plans of doing any observing while in the park. I'll probably extend my stay in Kota Kinabalu for another 2 days after the trek and shall find a nice spot to do observing then.

well... if you are unwilling to travel, it's quite difficult to get clear and superb nites over here. maybe if we can lucky, we can get super clear skies, but it happens once in a blue moon =).

you should try out skies from other countries. It's something that you'll remember for the rest of your life ^.^.

cheers,
