seeing the skies cleared near the zenith, i rushed home after my date to setup my newly bought scope..
while scanning the skies for any stars to pinpoint to, i saw an orange streak across the sky, spanning as wide as i can open my index finger to my pinky. lasted for like 2 seconds. wow! the second meteor of my night. it was near the star Achernar. that was my first star i focus my scope to. i have to say, Kimo did an excellent job collomating the scope. stars were very sharp. plyed around with the televue 6 mm and with the 6mm + 2x barlow. i could see the star drift pretty fast.
next i pointed higher, into the Aquarius. with just the 20mm Meade plossl, it was good to view the star field. google star map said Neptune is near Aquarius wonder if i can locate it.. droolz...
looks like there is no sleep for me tonight.. back to more viewing~~ not going to waste such fine night!
finally understood why i was told it will be pretty hard to focus things near the zenith with the mount.. now trying to get used to an EQ mount..

Re: Bornfree's bedroom obs
i thought of waking early to catch jupiter so went to sleep after 30 mins of obs... then around 4-5am it started to rain and went to close my window.. thank god no strong wind blowing the rain in, else my scope will be like in a car wash...
wake up at 6 to see the skies are very overcast on the eastern side... no jupiter this morning.. but got to see Sirus and its neighbouring stars b4 it got bright.. Mars could have been visible as well..not my morning skies..

Congrats bornfree...now you understand that "Astronomers Do IT at night and in the morning!"
I myself is only a "at night" type unless you count "doing it all night long till morning" like what I do in Mersing..haha.
And congrats on catching a fireball too...

Join a Mersing trip sometime, you wont regret what you can see with a 6-inch in a dark site ;)
I miss the place where stars shine bright, to gaze upwards in awe of the sight

Glad to hear that you have a convenient obs location within your home. Makes it all the more easy to start obbing when the skies are clear.
I'm waiting to settle a few more components of my setup before I set up my "observatory" at my balcony. Western views FTW~

It is a good thing to be contented and explore with what you have at locations you can visit for now. This will make you appreciate better gear and locations in the future and not take clear skies there for granted.bornfree wrote:i know... droolz.... for now have to be contented with what i can do...

In short, it is not a good thing for a beginner to buy a 16" dob as his/her first telescope and first light it at Atacama desert.
