M33 - Spiral Galaxy (HaRGB)

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

M33 - Spiral Galaxy (HaRGB)

Post by beginner »

Hi,

Sharing a shot from last year.
This spiral galaxy is commonly known as the Triangulum Galaxy.
Although it is the third largest of the Local Group of galaxies (Milky Way and Andromeda included), it is still rather faint.
Hence would require long exposure to bring out the detail.

Current total exposure time is not sufficient, but anyhow it roughly does bring out the shape.

Exposure : R-7, G-8, B-6 x 5min, Ha 3 x 5min
Final Image : HaRGB composite

Thanks for viewing.

joshelerry -

To get sufficient signal you need a long exposure. How long? say 2 hours..

Now can you get 2 hours out of a single exposure? probably not. And even if you could, a single airplane flying through the frame would ruin your single 2-hour exposure.

So you'd need to take very many shorter exposures and then stack them, say for example take 20-minute exposures and take 6 of them.

Very nice!
I think if that's a "beginner's" standard, then mine would be classified as "unfertilized egg"...

Thanks to all.

I reprocessed the M33. I found that I took some Ha but didn't apply it during the first processing. Ha blending for galaxy will bring the Ha glow on some of the stars and turn it to a more pleasant image.

Best regards,

this works for M33 because M33 has many active star forming regions, which are rich in Ha. not all galaxies would benefit from shooting Ha, though. but this one does.. [smilie=admire2.gif]
