Anybody has experience with Celestron C90

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Anybody has experience with Celestron C90

Post by Aryanto »

Hi,

I am actually more into nature than astro, since when I stay up late it will be in computer server room trying to earn my pay.

I would like to try digiscoping. But I am not ready for true SLR. I have Sony F717 (yeah big lense - big minus for digiscoping) but will be getting a Sony T5 soon (non auto but can take 1cm Macro photo!) :P
I will probably end up mounting F717 as finder and T5 with the scope.

However birdwatcher like to talk more about birds than equipment. Thus my posting here, and I do see some of the guys here has taken pictures of birds as well. I am thinking of a mak like celestron c90 because of chromatic abberation (more for daytime)

First is, how fragile is a Mak? It looks good due to shortness (I do not want to carry bazooka or mistaken as terrorist) and not so heavy. Not heavy scope = not so heavy tripod = total weight reduction. And I do walk around a lot.

I read somewhere that smaller mak, like celestron c90 is factory collimated and fixed thus no collimation necessary. True or partly true? :?:

Is it affected by humidity a lot? What about other types? (refractor, newton - dobson definitely out of question).

I have visited some shops locally but always get recommendation of equipment costing $1K and above. And always a refractor. May be they are upselling?
And not even ED lense. :?

Can anybody give me some advice please? :D

BTW, I finally see Carefour selling telescope, first supermarket in Singapore selling one I reckon. Definitely will avoid, after reading all the horror stories. :o

Hi,

Maks are compact for their focal length. Being compact, it is higher portable and good for birding but not so good for digiscoping due to the long focal length.

Not being user-collimateable is a 2-edged sword. If it is off, you need to send it back to the factory for collimation. There is an article on how to choose a scope on the singastro site.

I think our dealer-members can sell you a new 90mm Mak for <$1K. I also have an under-used 90mm Orion MCT for sale. Drop me a PM if you want to consider a 2nd-hand 90mm mak.

Hi,
You could consider getting a 45 degree diagonal as it would give a upright (normal) image. The astronomy 90 degree or 60 degree diagonals will give a MIRROR image. If you directly connect the eyepiece to the scope without the diagonal, it will give an inverted image.

No need diagonal if using refractor :-)

Hi Aryanto

If you are looking for a Mak with erect image diagonal, maybe you can check out a recent post by Roma who is selling a 130mm Mak ota with 45 deg diagonal and other accessories for only $480.

I bought mine already, from Astro in Omninmax, Jurong.
But price is not negotiable. :x

Still learning how to use it, but still cannot aim at stars. Pretty cloudy recently and there is no moon. :(

So far has been aiming for stationary objects. Happy so far knowing that I can finally make up the blue neon signboard from CBD skyscraper is CapitaLand logo, and the blurry green T sign is a neon signboard (in chinese, so I cannot read), and I can read the neon sign of peninsula plaza, all the way from my flat, 20th floor in toa payoh, facing Toa Payoh Safra. :P

Spent more $$$ for tripods also. Sure will spend more for eyepiece, but let me get used to these first.
