LPR or UHC Filter for our skies?

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

LPR or UHC Filter for our skies?

Post by jermng »

Hi,
Could anyone recommend whether I should get a broadband LPR filter or narrowband UHC filter for our light polluted skies? It will generally be used for viewing DSOs like the Orion Nebula etc ... =)
I've got a "lobang" for a broadband LPR filter but I'm wondering if I should get that or a narrowband. Would a broadband have a noticeable effect under our light-polluted skies or is it just hype? =)

Regards,

Generally, broadband filter may give marginal improvements only, and narrowband filters give more significant improvements in contrast for viewing DSOs in urban skies. If you just want to try one, it is better to get the narrowband eg, Ultrablock or UHC filter.

Hi Jeremy,

I own a 1000 oaks O3 filter , and if you live in the eastern area, or somewhere near east, I can let you try it out on your scope. It works wonders for most emission nebulas. It fits onto the back of 1.25inch eyepieces.

Best regards,

Thanks for all your advice! =)
Seems like a narrowband is the way to go ... =) On that note, is it wiser to get a narrowband like an UltraBlock or something like an OIII filter for something like M42? =)

Hi,
If you can get only one, get the UHC filter. Then follow by O3 filter and H-Beta filter. If you think you still need to buy some other filter, this show that you have a lots of money and no where to spent. So, go and buy another O3 filter and gave me as a Christmas present... Thanks!!! Ha Ha Ha!!!   =P =P =P

Have a nice day and Merry Christmas!!!

OKOK it's the season for giving ... Since you always help me so much, I shall give you a filter for Xmas ... But I can't afford O3 filter lah ... My father got O2 and CO2 filter from his fishtank ... I give you?? Hee hee

Anyway, ok, I think I shall get a Narrowband filter. =) Does that mean a broadband filter is practically useless?
Weixing, last time at MarsWatch 05 I borrowed a filter from you, what was it ah? I think it helped quite abit ... =)

Broadband filter not useless, but not as useful as a UHC filter. It'll be useful for viewing star clusters or for astrophotography if you want more stars to appear on your image.

It a UHC filter.

Have a nice day.

Actually depends on the aperture of your scope. 4" or less you should get the LPR, bigger than 4" UHC is better.

Actually the H-beta filter is of limited use on very very few DSOs only, eg, Horsehead neb, California Neb, Cocoon Neb. Doesn't seem worth the money lah!
