you have done well with the mosaic attempt!
as to your questions on DSO imaging,
you need to have a motorised fork mount otherwise you cannot track the stars.
You could also employ a german equatorial mount that has motors well. Even with DSLR DSO imaging with 5 minutes sub exposures, you will need a trackable platform so that you could go deep enough. As to your guidescope needs, it depends on whether you are using an off-axis guider through the same imaging scope, which in that case, you do not need a guidescope. Otherwise if you are using the scope strictly for imaging, you will need the guidescope to ensure stars are pinpoint and minimize tracking errors of the mount.
