Modify your Digital SLR
Modify your Digital SLR
Has anyone tried modifying their digital SLR for astrophotography? Shot of buying one off the shelf like the canon 20DA or the Hutech equivalents. What are the complexities involved?

Tan Guan has done it before. He was posting really nice images of Singapore skies using a modified 300D but has since moved to Australia. Its pity he no longer drops by here anymore as his images are really good.
In fact, he has upgraded to ccd and was trying to sell his camera here but that was quite some time back...

Hi Cataclysm,
Personally, I would not recommend the mod from the outset, at least not before a few successfully attempt in capturing a few non H-alpha or/bright objects using the stock body first.
Infact, many of these objects looks more photogenic with a stock DSLR, than with a modified one. ie M42,45, M31, M27, most gobular clusters etc...
Only when your need for speed & H-alpha sensitivity outgrow what the stock DSLR can offer, then perhaps you should consider the inevitable. Do note that the total cost of modifying the camera can exceed the cost of a used DSLR camera itself and the certain aspect of normal photography will be sacrificed.
Most importantly have fun shooting in the dark,
Matthew
