Is it possible to image Polaris from sg ?

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Is it possible to image Polaris from sg ?

Post by PETER LOO »

It is at least theoretically possible since it is 2.08 deg in Altitude during transit, ie. when Local sidereal time (LST) = Star's Right Ascension (RA)

Hi Peter,

I would think it's possible as long as there's nothing blocking the view, like a big boat :)

Here's my back of the envelope argument: 2 deg is the size of 2 pinkies held at arms length, and refraction at the horizon near the Equator gives you another 1/2 deg so, you have about 2.5 deg above the horizon to view Polaris. And for comparison, the Sun is 1/2 deg, and we've all seen the Sun setting at the horizon at the beach, so I conclude that it *is* definitely possible.
