MTWB: Truss Dobsonian 8 to 10 inch

Post by maguro77 »

Hi all, am looking for a truss dob that is easy to take apart, heaviest single component no more than say 10 kg , mirrors can be diassembled for portability/travel/storage. And eyepiece height at zenith not exceeding 50+ inch. Willing to consider something like the premium Starmaster Versa 8 inch or more value handcrafted stuff like stargazer steve's 10 inch truss dob.

I put Might Want to Buy because i am not sure what truss dobs exist here other than the Meade lightbridge/astrosky/teleport. Also not sure if available truss dob fits my needs or my small living room.

pls pm me with details or email khorjss@gmail.com.

thanks. Joyce

If I am not wrong there is only one 8" truss dob (portaball) owner and one 10" Teleport in Singastro. Most truss dob owners here have scopes 12.5" and larger..

You probably need to buy a first hand truss dob of 8" from USA. Also, if you are buying from Starmasters, be prepared for a long wait of many months or year. The quickest (wait time) truss dob of premium quality are from Obsessions but the smallest size is 12.5". However, there is the new 15" UC from Obsessions and its volume may probably be quite comparable to a 12.5" Truss dob of conventional type.

I can make you a nice 10" truss with collapsible dob mount and base if you have access to a premium 10" f/5 mirror.

cheers,

Those are premium stuff. If you want something more basic, then Perseid has a DIY 8" Truss Dob that secures into a small wooden box when not in use. Very portable and they ship to Singapore.
Check them out here :

They are one of our site vendor member.

Also can check out Robin and Astrobargains too.

But if $$$ is not a problem, Elton's 10" Teleport is a joy to use and super portable for the aperture size. He's looking to sell it off after upgrading to the Obsession 18". [smilie=admire2.gif]

Hi,
Hi all, am looking for a truss dob that is easy to take apart, heaviest single component no more than say 10 kg , mirrors can be diassembled for portability/travel/storage.
What do you mean travel?? By car or by plane?? By car, still can, but by plane... I think it's not that practical to travel with the dob by plane even you break down every parts... it'll be a risky journey for the dob.

Anyway, the Elton 10" Teleport is on sale because he got an 18" new "wife" now... ha ha ha. :P

By the way, I think the 10" Teleport is the most portable (by car and if by plane, you better buy an air ticket for it  ) most compact, most neat and fastest set-up time of all 10" dob out there. It's a premium dob with a premium mirror, so I think it won't be cheap.

Have a nice day.

Yup..the Teleport features telecopic truss that extends into place rather than need you to install them. result is put down, extend truss , put eyepiece in, collimate and you're good to go!

Yes, if you want quality and portability and have a very very deep pocket (like >$5000 of spare change?), then you should consider the Teleport 10" which is a very well-designed, well crafted, all-in-one visual (premium) scope. It is really a 'one of a kind' scope, and probably the only one in Asia, and for sale! It should also fit in nicely as a small compact furniture (when retracted) in your living room.

Otherwise, on a more limited budget, you can consider a 8" Celestron solid tube dobsonian, which Joo Beng (Astrobargain) still has one for sale for under $1000. It is a mass-produced scope which is good enough for beginners, and suitable for those who have a back yard or drives a car.

Arief, you are the 11th in line....

err... the next bigger scope is still under construction and not ready for the next few months, so I am still using the 11" scope for now. [smilie=victory.gif]
