Hi,
I've been interested in astronomy since last year and have always wanted to get a telescope/binoculars for proper star-gazing and moon-viewing . Can someone reccomend me some good beginner telescopes or binoculars with the reasons , pricing and places to get them ? thanks a lot !

i've heard that nikon action 8 X 40 7216 binoculars is quite good. can anyone give me some advice on this ? and where can i get them ?

i would like to see the moon's craters, and the planets. is it possible to see some of the galaxies ? cos i saw from history channel's the universe that some famous astronomer in the ancient times was able to see a galaxy with his naked eye . can't rmb the name of the galaxy (but it was some sister thing), but i think it's the nearest galaxy.

Why don't you join some of our Singastorians at the planned Sidewalk Astronomy at Tiong Bahru Park on 29 May. There will be some scopes and binos there and you can also chat up with some of our very experienced gurus to find out more about this fascinating hobby.

You can find them at some camera shop, but please note the list price in Nikon Singapore website and don't paid more than that. Anyway, as what swimaniac mention, you should join the Sidewalk Astronomy at Tiong Bahru Park on 29 May first.

That's M31... Andromeda Galaxy. Can see it using naked eye as a small fuzzy patch in dark sky country when the sky is clear. In Singapore, you need to go to the darkest part of Singapore and under the best clear sky in order to see it using naked eye.

thanks ! tiong bahru (did i spell it correctly?) is a bit far for me. i live in boon lay. but i'll try to go (: so if i use the binoculars/telescope would i be able to see the galaxy ?

M31?? No. M31 only rise at around 4am in the morning now. So you won't see it on the obs session.

By the way, just to make your expectation right: You won't see any of the deep sky objects (Nebula and Galaxy) like what you saw in TV documentary and Astrophotograph... clear, well define and with colours! Most deep sky object that your eye will see through telescope had basically no colour, look fuzzy and faint... even you use a big telescope... that's why it's call fuzzy object. In Singapore, the light pollution make it worst... it'll appear even dimmer than what you should see in a dark country... especially galaxy... it's a challenge to observe galaxy in Singapore.

I don't know the item part number #7216, but I do know the Nikon Action EX 8x40mm cost $200 at Cathay Photo. It is waterproofed, good eye-relief, wide field, but not sharp to the edge and not fully multi-coated. I think it should serve well for beginners. I have the Pentax PCF WPII 8x40mm which you can check it out on 29 May at Tiong Bahru Park, which is just opposite Tiong Bahru Plaza, and that's where Tiong Bahru MRT is, so it should be easy for anyone to get there.
