Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!
Just come up with the weirdest idea .... I am wondering, can a manfrotto 410 Gear head ( Load Capacity up to 5 kg) or a Manfrotto 405 / 400 (7.5 and 10kg respectively) be mounted on a GEM Tripod?
If that is possible, and the Tripod can take very much more load then a normal Manfrotto Tripod, would it not be better to mount it on a GEM tripod?
Just Thinking out loud, can anyone with a Gearhead confirm that? (hehehe ... Samual, me know you have a normal GEM Tripod and 410 Manfrotto head .... got what I mean??? )
Actually you will be stressing the 410 head in any case with more load that it can take in its specs. Also any source of vibration and dampening characteristic will be coming from the 410 head even with a sturdier tripod or GEM tripod. But I have mounted the 410 on my GEM before, but for the purpose of greater flexibility in mounting a camera-with-lens setup for ease of movement and targeting of objects.
My two cents!

Hi,
I do have both, but my GEM tripod (the one for a HEQ5 mount) is quite heavy - while on the other hand my 410 head is used mainly for my ultra portable Pronto. So even if the 410 can be mounted on the tripod, the 2 don't really go very well together..that's why I haven't really tried it myself.
Anyway, I don't think the 410 head can be mounted onto the GEM tripod directly because most GEM tripods come with that little North-indicating thingy sticking out and it gets in the way. Even if that thing is not there, I don't think the central mounting screw of GEM tripods are long enough to reach the threaded hole in the 410 head when it's placed on top.
if u take a look, the bottom of the 410 head is the usual screw thread to fit manfrotto series of tripod. most gem tripods have different attachment, 3 screws at the side, one screw from the bottom, anyone can help me check if the screw threads are the same? think might need modification to fit.
