Hello people of SingAstro. I am trying to cultivate an interest in star gazing but I know nothing about the skies and I do not have any equipment to speak of. My only tools are my eyes. Sometimes, I look up into the night sky and I see a couple of stars twinkling, but have no idea what they really are or how they really look like up-close.

I am here today, in the hopes of learning more by tagging along in newbie outings and also wish that I could know a permanant mentor who could guide me in this cosmic art and have outings together (I'm willing to carry your heavy star gazing equipment in exchange for learning ;)

I'm willing to learn and cultivate some patients for this hobby. That being said, let's go hunt some stars!

Welcome to Singastro! In addition to what airconvent advised, you may want to read Star Ware and the Backyard Astronomer's Guide. Install Stellarium (www.stellarium.org) and try matching what you see in the software to the stars and vice versa with your naked eyes. Try identifying the Orion constellation if you have not already done so.

Hi Desmond welcome to Singastro.You can read
astronomy books ,I recommend " The Star Guide"
by Robin Kerrod available from the library.

Also go for some astronomy observation sessions.
can consider buying binoculars later
