The summer milky sets very early now but Maybe. If your up for the challenge. You could also try the Summer Triangle part of the Milky Way which is near zenith when the sun sets. I do believe it can be done with compact cams as well. Need to really give it a try.

I do agree with gary. For serious AP using a DSLR would be a better choice. It too can be done with a compact cam. This photo were taken with my G1X when my DSLR died. IMHO.
