Newbie needs help with inherited gear

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Newbie needs help with inherited gear

Post by captdrain »

Hi all,

Need a bit of help here and you guys seem really helpful and nice.

I recently inherited a bunch of gear from my father. For various reasons, he's been forced to give up his hobby and did not know what to do with his stuff. So here I am helping him to figure it out.

Personally, I don't have the same interests as him and have no knowledge of the stuff that I now have. I need to figure out what they are and what to do with them. So here I am!

I have set out a list of the items I have below (as best as I can keeping in mind I have no knowledge of this hobby), and included some photos as well. As far as I know they are probably from 5-10 years ago.

My questions:
1. Are these gear relevant still? Are they outdated?
2. Are they worth anything if I try to sell them?
3. Does anyone know of a charitable cause I can donate them to?

Thanks for the help!
Adrian

Hi
If these stuff have been kept in a dry box free of fungus, they can be sold for quite a sum. But if you want to donate them, you can PM Mystique. She conducts some volunteer programmes for schools and I am sure they would love to take some. Meanwhile you can search the buy-sell section for indicative prices. :)

ps BTW, these actually provide a decent set up for local viewing (assuming there is a mount too)

Hi!

That's quite a bountiful collection your dad passed on to you. Actually if its possible, maybe you might wanna check if on the condition of the glass/optical surfaces of the telescopes and eyepieces , are there any signs of fungus or still good looking condition?

Optical equipment dont really have an expiry date or outdated phase, I still use eyepieces that are super old..haha

Hope this helps...:)

Ah yes I had also inherited 2 huge dry cabinets and these have been sitting in them all this time! Last I checked they were fungus free yes.

As for the mount, it's not in best condition I think. There's some electronics in it and I have no idea if it even works anymore...

Thanks for all the responses!

Should remove the unnecessary plastic and paper packaging when put in dry cabinet.
