Nice report Dave. Glad to see more people with telescopes coming out to share their hobby. Making friends face-to-face is definitely more rewarding than just clicking buttons online. :)

Regarding the ability to do sidewalks and commitments in life, if we can go malaysia on average once a month for 2 nights (at least 15 hours of night sky observation and photography), I don't see why it is that hard to spend say 45 minutes one month once do a simple sidewalk very near our home location with a super grab and go setup. Need not be the most populated spot in our location. Even 2 or 3 visitors taking a look during that session can be significant in raising astro awareness in the long run. To make it more enjoyable, can just treat it as a catch up session with your friends (even non-astro ones) staying near the area so even if zero "customer" come and take a look at our scopes, we still manage to spend quality time strengthening our friendships.

2/6/2012 sidewalk session

Clear and hazy sky again! Started setting up around 8.30pm. Was very impress, for the first time before I could fully set up my telescope, the public have already started queuing. WOW! Did not expected the turn out to be so well!

Had very lovely and enjoyable views of Saturn, Mars and the Moon thru the light haze. Despite the haze, we still managed to spilt the star Alpha Centauri. The public who joined me at the moment were so surprised to see it's a binary star. Most of them only though it was a single star. Glad to have show them Alpha Centauri.

With just 4 days to go, shared with some of the public on what going to happen on the 6 of June 2012. The Venus transit 2012! With the help on my iPad, and Gary's video, the job of explaining got easier.  Many out them were surprised to find out that after the transit on June 6th , the next Venus transit only happens at 10/11 dec 2117.

About 10.45-ish PM, the sky condition got worst.  At around 11pm, as it was getting late,  most of the crowd left the place. We did our own viewing and yet again I was poison with Gary's binoviewer.

Tested and proven that this equation works!!!
Binoviewer + 5" MCT + pointed to the moon =  lost for words!
Got to get myself one of those with my new setup!

Overall had a fun time in the session and enjoying sharing with the public! And big thanks to everyone who joined in to make this session a success!

Gary: Big thanks, for coming down tonight. You have given me countless advise on conducting a sidewalk session! And also countless poison on equipments!

Hazrie: Thanks again for your coke light! And bringing your 50mm old school refractor to let the public view the Moon! Can see that many of them love the views on the Moon with your setup!

Cliffort: Thanks for coming down to support us even after you had just came back from helping at Remus's astro-photography workshop! Thanks for all the advice you had given us too!

Avarielle: Thanks for coming down to show you support despite your busy day at work with those Dinos! Hope you enjoined the views of Saturn at 167x. do let me know when you be having your sidewalk, will be glad to be able to support you in your session in any way possible.

Jessquek: Thank for coming down, hope you enjoined the views tonight!

Thanks to Dave for organising yet another fruitful sidewalk session and all the rest for their support and participation. Crowd was definitely bigger compared to weekdays and lots of oh-my-gods were heard throughout the session. :)

Dave, regarding the queue building up while setting up your telescope, now you have a taste of the "pressure" James and Alfred felt when they were setting up their goto big scopes at Toa Payoh at an open area with high human traffic. :) Last night there was this adorable kid who was following right behind me very very closely while I was setting up my scope so that he can the first person to take a look through it at Saturn. Just a little concern I might accidentally bump him off the edge of the stepped sloped. Fortunately, Dave was showing stuff on his ipad and I told the boy to go to Uncle Dave first as he is showing something very interesting. :P

As for my "poisons", they are the cheap pharmaceutical kind you can buy from neighbourhood shops. Nothing compared to the specialist by-prescription only "poison" you may be exposed by others in the future. :)

No squirrels spotted last night but glad Jessie and spouse made an effort to come down and was rewarded with a good opportunity to gain experiential knowledge by side by side comparisons of the pros and cons between 2 refractors and a maksutov.

It was nice to finally meet Hazrie and take a look at and through his 60mm scope (not 50mm as previously speculated) which uses a 0.965" diagonal and eyepieces:

Meade Polaris 60mm AZ with a 3x barlow:
Image

The focuser is surprising smooth. In today's age where newcomers can afford beginner scope of 5 inches and above, it may be hard to imagine how much lunar detail a 60mm can show *for its price*.

This is a shot of the Moon through it:
Image

(1) Shot using camera phone with poor low light capability.
(2) Both hands holding phone were shaking slightly when shot was taken.
(3) Shot through a budget 0.965" eyepiece.
(4) There was still a slight haze in the sky.
(5) Photo as it is. Cropped and resized only. No photo enhancing techniques employed.

Considering all of the above factors, one can imagine how much better Moon looked through the eyepiece and for someone who have not seen the Moon close up before, this scope is already capable of attracting a few "wows" as it did before as well as last night.

8/6/2012 sidewalk session

After a really hot day in the noon, it was patches of blue sky at first but as the night progress, we had clear skies! Once again another successful and fruitful session.

Reached bishan park at about 7.10pm. Since the sky was still quite bright, decided to take my own sweet time and slowly setup my telescope. Really very slowly. Finally setup at 7.45pm.

Saturn! First object which I spotted. Yet again the public were amaze by the lords of the rings, Saturn. Many commented, is this real?, it look as it I am seeing from the computer, and wow, it looks like a cartoon! It always amaze me that the public get very "high" when they start seeing Saturn. Seeing of Saturn got better thru out the night. Although sometimes playing hide and seek with us.

Mars was next. ICE CAPS visible!!! Should not have start out with Saturn at first. To the public, Mars became quite boring. But to us, we were more amaze with the ice caps then Saturn itself. Lesson learn in sidewalk. Show mars first before showing Saturn.

To a look and start splitting double stars. Alpha Centauri, big dipper's Alcor and Mizar and the summer triangle's double double. When viewing with the naked eyes, they only saw one point on light. But thur a telescope, that same one point of light became two!

As the night progresses, scorpius began to rise higher. Time for some well missed DSOs. NGC 6231, M7 and M6. Got great view of all of them! Lovely seeing!

About 11pm, the moon began to rise. Many of use waited to ob the moon! Push my scope to around 167x. WOO! Lovely views! Managed to catch some details on the moon like Vallis Alpes, Rima Ariadeus and Rima Petavius. Lovely!

At around 12.30am, the rain clouds decided to drop by. Packed up and left!

Gary: thanks again for coming down on such short notice and for your support and helping me to guild the rest for the session! We shall find a day when after our skin recovered, due to the Venus transit on the 6th June 2012, and get burn again when doing a solar ob in the near future! =p

Clifford:  thank for sharing with us the photos taken on the Venus transit 2012!  Nicely done! Thanks coming down and the lifted back home, if not for you I might have been caught under the rain!

Avarielle: it been countless times coming down and support my sidewalk session. I really own you a very big thank you for helping me so much! Thanks for your help and thanks for helping me print out the info of my FB and twitter page on paper.  Hope you enjoy the view of Saturn!

Hazrie: again thank you so much for the coke! And the awesome joke you have shared with us! Funny lar you! Jokes aside, thanks for bring down your scope to letting people enjoy the views of the moon! Congrats! You finally manage to find Saturn with your scope!

Koh: although you only came down for a short while, but still thanks for coming down! Would want to see more views on your C8 soon!

Thomas and Khurram: thanks a lot for coming down. Hope to get to know you guys better and hope to ob with you guys more!
