Announcing an upcoming public astronomy event here in Singapore, held in conjunction with:

(1) the perihelic opposition of Mars where it will be closest to the Sun (and this occurs once every 15-17 years - it will be really bright, almost like in 2003!), and

(2) a total lunar eclipse, all within the span of one night!

This special date would be 27th July 2018 (Friday evening over to Saturday morning).

Mars will essentially be up almost the entire night, and the P1 phase of the lunar eclipse will commence 1:14AM on 28th July. The venue would be at the rooftop area of the Marina South Pier Building (conveniently located just next to Marina South MRT station), and would be open to the public. The event will officially kick off at 8PM, and the community is invited to spend the night at the rooftop premises. Should the response be overwhelming, stargazing is also permitted at the grass fields around the main building. This is the same location as the previous January 2018 lunar eclipse event, but for this upcoming event, we will be able to use the building to host this event. You are most welcomed to attend, please invite your family and friends along too! And do bring your instruments along!

For telescope-owners volunteering their instruments: There will be a meeting somewhere in June to brief the event and pertinent planning details. It would be helpful to also let me know in advance if you are keen to bring and instrument(s) details.

For anyone who is willing to volunteer/help in other ways: We certainly welcome people who can assist in educating the public, crowd control, etc, so even if you have no instruments, and would like to support, this is most appreciated!

Update: We may also have on-site talks on that day and possibly a mini-astronomy exhibition. This is still tentative and subject to approval from the building authorities. If this is approved, we may welcome even more volunteers to help out in these areas.

Certainly looking forward to putting this together, and meeting everyone once again! Cheers.

Latest (as of 30th June 2018): Updated above poster content.

Will there be enough car parks? The venue has limited car parks and if I were to bring the scope at 10pm, will I be able to find parking? Will there be any reservation of car parks?

YB, yes carpark space will be quite limited, and especially at 10pm time period. it is best to access the site by MRT or other forms of transport, or alternatively, one way is to get someone to look after your instrument package at the drop-off point (Pier Building), and park at the next nearest carpark which is near the cruise center.
