Post by bornfree »

I stumbled upon this CHDK thing.

anyone tried this on their canon to squeeze the most out of their camera?

Hi bornfree.

I use the CHDK on my g1x to the 5mins exposure.

I use it on my Canon Powershot A720IS to play reversi. :)

And to make use of its RAW feature (not available in the original A720IS) for higher quality basic nightscape shooting.

If you need to have a portable compact camera to do non-astrophotography shooting, it may a good idea. But if you are buying one more for serious astrophotography, a compact Canon camera with CHDK enhancement is of course still no match for DSLR in terms of image quality.

I do agree with gary.

For serious AP using a DSLR would be a better choice.

It too can be done with a compact cam.

This photo were taken with my G1X when my DSLR died.

IMHO. It makes a good back up widefield cam.

The Canon G1x is slightly larger than a normal compact but smaller than DSLR. If you don't mind a smaller sensor size than the G1x in return for slightly more portability, you may also consider other enthusiast cameras like Canon S110 (not sure if CHDK is available for this model as of now), the Olympus XZ-1/XZ-2 and the Nikon P330. They have a fast lens and do longer exposure than typical budget compact cameras. Some even have bulb mode.

The one you saw during our last "townhall" makan session at Toa Payoh after the library talk is the Nikon P330. Quite impressed with the nightscape photos shot by its owner during his overseas trip. :)
