Thanks to Clifford and subsequently my other friends who inform me about this wonderful free application for smartphones.
Basically, it is the Skype of SMS. Allow sms to be sent between smartphone users using mobile internet connection. Thus, it does not use up your SMS monthly quota.
Very useful especially if both parties are in different countries. Can facilitate cheap almost-instant communication with other astronomers and astro gear retailers/manufacturers abroad.

In the future, I hope to implement a opt-in hotline sms-only number for announcing all astro events in Singapore, especially sidewalk sessions. This app will be very useful in cutting down the potential costs. And a dual-sim card dual-core Android phone.

Thanks for the heads up.
"Please download the latest version of WhatsApp Messenger and enjoy our service free for 1 year! During, or after free trial period you can purchase service for $1.99 USD/year."
So it is not totally free. But if is really good $1.99 USD per year seems quite reasonable. Imaging the saving you make in a year compared to the expenses of sending normal smses when you are abroad.
