Forum Sub Topics

Hi
I brought this up almost 2 years ago and doing it now
again. There aren't really that many posts per month
on singastro and sometimes only 1 or 2 per day. I'm
not too sure if it is a good idea to have so many
categories right now. We could end up with only a few
posts per forum every few weeks. For someone like me
with generic interests, I will have to scan through
each and every forum.

Can I recommend (its just a suggestion...don't flame
me!) that we try and merge back some of the forums
first as follows :

1. General Discussion Forum (yahoogroups-type posts)
2. Astro-Photography Forum (self explanatory)
3. Buy-Sell Forum (self explanatory)
4. Resource Database (no replies allowed here. the
moderator posts all relevant articles submitted for
refrence by members, eg. ATM, Telescope FAQs, How To
Get To Mersing, Places to observe, collimating a
scope, etc)

If any forum starts to see a surge (lets say more than
40 posts a week), then we consider splitting that
forum.

What do you think?

Rich, actually the amount of sub-topics here is very very minimal for a forum. If you look at clodynights and astromarts forums, they are far far more.

Problem is, pple need to get out from Yahoo and come here.

Any chance of a Cosmology sub-forum?? But i guess not much will be willing to participate though. A whopping percentage of fellow SingAstro members are more to the practical side than to the theoritical... :(

I also think there are far too many topics/subtopics.

I have cut down quite a number of them. Those gone were Bino, mount, theoretical astronomy and current affairs.

I think what's left is the bare minimum. We have to understand that there will be many newbies coming in here in future. If we have too few sub-topics, the forum will look very intimidating to them and they won't even want to register not to mention about encouraging them to post. Having a few more sub-topics will make it easier for newbies to post.

Hm... Good point you have there VinSnr, but I think opening up a 'newbie' forum could solve this problem? The forum list is still too long as I think... Just maybe a few big forums with all the different threads in should do, cos the forums are sparse...

I propose this as my bit of experience in forum moderation and website management:
1) Announcements (includes reports of bugs, etc. in 'others' forum)
2) Astro Corner (with a newbie thread)
3) Off-Astro Chat
4) Vendors Corner

That should do, doesn't it? :)
