Transporting a large telescope by public transport

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Transporting a large telescope by public transport

Post by orly_andico »

This is a really good article - http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=2919

The only challenge is finding that bass trombone bag, it is probably expensive.

But considering that one can take the KTM from Woodlands all the way to Bekok.. sounds like a good idea!

A variation I can think of is, the side-pockets of the Fusion bag, which normally holds the padding, put your sockets/spare clothes in there.

Then the mount (ZEQ25) in a Samsonite spinner suitcase.

But transport to where?
I bet you can get on a bullet train out of Tokyo and reach fairly dark skies in an hour or two by public transport and its pretty much safe in Japan.
On the other hand, wherever you go in Singapore its pretty much bright skies and deploying int he middle of nowhere up North is not exactly safe unless you know the area.
Still, it is a good idea.

Thanks for the interesting info Orly. I thought only less discriminating visual people will be "poisoned" by the skies there. :P

According to this authorised Chinese distributor, this bag costs about ¥1660 which is about SGD$339:

After you solve the luggage bag issues, there's a bigger one .... custom clearance. :) But like most things in the world, there is always a solution. :)

Taking the train is fun. But then you will miss the F1 convoy racing fun along NS highway. :)

John: u can try to ask around this shop opposite Bugis Village and Bugis + (formerly known as Illuma) . they make customised bags, but may not have padding, need to enquire.

Or if all else fails, use those traveling bag with 4 wheels and extendable pulling handles, buy a few meters of bubble wrap and DIY pad and line the inside

Water proof. Nice. Thanks for sharing.

Where you bought it and how much does it costs?
