Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

WOOo, New scope!!! More clouds!! Anyway, i'll suggest you to try out eyepieces that other people have first.. so as to let you have a feel and taste of what is suitable for you. As what the good guys at Televue says "An eyepiece is half of your telescope!" But somehow, i think they are referring to their prices...?

Hmmm... maybe it explains why the satellite picture shows it to be getting slightly cloudy in our region... :)

The curse strikes again...

Anyway, it's easy to go overboard with eyepieces. Generally speaking, I'm in the camp that feels that one should start with at least plossls.

Anyway, you should at least get 2-3 eyepieces. 1 that offers wide views, maybe 40x or so, 1 that offers medium views, 80x or so, and 1 that zooms in to the limit of your telescope, which is around 160x or so in your case.

Oh btw, I may be planning to offload a few meade plossls, so maybe my comments may not be entirely altruistic. If you want to try out a few of them, just let me know.

Just my 2 cents, and your few dollars? :D

Another saying goes - "...A telescope is only as good as it's eyepiece..."

A good scope deserves good eyepieces.

For a start, people who buy new scopes typically buy 2 or 3 eyepieces and add in a barlow lens. That will be able to last you quite a while. And given the *quality* and *reputation* of your new scope, I would say go all out for TeleVue or Takahashi eyepieces

You won't want to have "your ferrari running on trishaw wheels" would you ?

Hi,
So what scope did you buy? A Borg? Please register your equipment at the Equipment Database.
For 76mm short tubes, it performs best at low mags, so if you can't afford, a few pieces of low mag plossls down to 6mm will do. These can be bought very cheaply and Sam has quite a wide range from Series 500 and above.
If got more money to burn, a Televue Radian would be a good compromise between cost and wide FOV (some would protest strongly!! )

Series 500s are strictly a big NO NO for her scope ! :D There will surely be some unseen resistance that will automatically 'repel' the barrel of any Series 500 eyepiece from being inserted into that scope ... like the way like pole of magnets repel each other

Sounds like a Tak FC 76 to me... Refractor, f/8, 76mm aperture...

I dun think it's extremely important to purchase branded premium eyepieces for observing. Of course, it'd be great to pick up premium stuff for everything that goes with the scope, but then, why call any equipment cheapo? I believe what we have (yes even the China stuff) is far better than what galileo or Isaac Newton had to play with, or even make themselves.

Anyway rich, I'm one person who'd protest regarding the radian. Widefield AND high mag? Nice to have, but to shell out over half a thousand for it, I'd just stick to having 2 EPs that can specialise in each for less than that

That being said, once in a while I like pumping up Shell V-power into my car. But at other times, I just stick to plain ol' SPC 98! (Hmm, I'm bad at analogies)

Hi,
Did you get the refractor that look like a 4" and thought it is a 4" refractor ?? :D

Anyway, I think you can get a few plossel, may be a 32mm and a 15mm, and a 3x barlow for a start, this will give you a low(19x), medium(41x and 57x) and high power(122x) for your scope with good eye relief at a low cost.... :)

I used to believe that Plossol are juz fine and that I will be nuts to shell out hundreds of dollars for a premium eyepiece. But a look through a couple of Naglers and Radians changed my view and now my wallet is hurting but I would say the impact of a large FOV with sharp views are worth it. :) Best way to decide would be to compare a variety of entry-level and premium eps before any purchase.

ok.. thanx for all the advice.. by the way mine's a 2nd hand scope so don't think the clouds will be attracted to that haha (any clouds is strictly not my fault!!) haha yeah i got the fc 76 from wira *thanx dear~* and u guy's hints are..erm.. subtle haha. oh i'll wait till i get everything then i go add to the equipment list. hope that'll be soon. i'm thinking of maybe 32mm, 15mm, 8mm plossl abd a 2x barlow.. is it ok? but i guess i'll play ard with other people's eyepieces first (if they let me) and decide what i'm most comfortable with. wira ask me to get naglers haha but i don't have his kind of $$
