The ACJC AstroFest is an annual event unlike any other. Aimed at bringing together Astronomy enthusiasts from various institutions to share their experiences and learn from each other, AstroFest combines both aspects of Astronomy – competitive and communal. We seek to foster ties between the various schools while allowing participants to strive for a higher understanding of the Science.

The idea of an AstroFest was conceived by Tan Wei Lin, Soh Rong’en and Kwan Jin Peng in November 2006. Faced with busy schedules, the plans were put on hiatus before we took them up. Much has been changed since the original, but the objectives remain unchanged. AstroFest has developed into a major Astronomy event with careful considerations after our experiences at more than 20 national Astronomy competitions and events over 5 years.

We are proudly sponsored by Astro Bargains, an astronomy equipment vendor in Singapore. Our star party could not have been made possible without the help from Bukit Panjang Government High School and Marine Parade CC’s YEC Astronomical Society. We thank them for their generous support!

Enjoy yourselves and clear skies ahead!

ACJC AstroFest 2008 introduces a new feature unlike any other before – an Astronomy symposium specially catered for students. The conference brings together Singapore’s most prominent and established student astronomers who are challenged to give an enlightening talk on any subject (in 15 minutes).

This year’s symposium features 4 speakers who have achieved milestones in the local Astronomy scene.

Ng Kia Boon
Kia Boon, currently 18, is the former Chairman of the Raffles Junior College’s Astronomy Club after stepping down late last month. At the recent International Olympiad for Astronomy and Astrophysics in December last year, he won himself an honorable Silver award and was ranked 20th in world. He has also participated in the Asian-Physics Physics Olympiad recently and returned with nothing less than an Honorable Mention.

Soh Rong’en
When it comes to capability, Rong’en has proved to be the finest the local astronomy community has to offer. Over 5 years, he has participated in a total of 10 local and overseas astronomy competitions and has amassed a national record of 12 Golds from all, with 7 Team Champions and an astounding 5 Individual Champions. Currently 19, he was also the former President of both the Bukit Panjang Government High School’s Science Team, and National Junior College’s Astronomy Club.

Kwan Jin Peng
Jin Peng is no stranger to the local astronomy scene. Currently the President of Marine Parade’s Community Centre’s Youth Executive Council Astronomical Society, he has also served as the President of Republic Polytechnic’s Astronomy Club. He is widely involved in organizing Astronomy activities for the local community with outreach activities from star parties at East Coast Park to overnight stargazing camps at Pulau Ubin.

Derek Low Ming Yuan
Derek is the President of Anglo-Chinese Junior College’s Astronomy Society and formerly served as the President of Bukit Panjang Government High School’s Astronomy Club. He initiated Singapore’s participation at international astronomy Olympiads and much like Rong’en, has participated in 10 local and overseas astronomy competitions, winning for himself 10 Golds.
