I think he means that SP may not accord astronomy a decent place in their workplan priorities...right, Mad Scientist ?
But at least can try first. Anyway, no effort needed. Members need only start prep once ok is given..else....Bedok Reservoir again!

It is not a bad idea placing the event in SP BUT there are many restrictions and stuffs like that; which even though its "1 year- planning" in advance might not really be approved fully by the School Affairs Department. It is possible to try but be prepared for some disagreements posed by the institute. SP Astronomers are most willing to help in future astronomical events but i want to emphasise on 1 important issue that we have limited "power" and it would be best if the organising commitee approaches the school directly! :)

i think bedok reservoir is a good place as there are people passing by and can stop by when they see us. unlike in a building sp where only people who actually knows about it will appear. i think we focus too much on attracting people. i mean of course, it is good and all the get more people into astronomy but that is not our main aim right? cant we have observations because we WANT to get together to discuss and stargaze. if some people get curious and start asking us things we can of cos then be more than willing to share our opinions. is star party without lots of public unenjoyable? i don't think so. the best is to have a unrestricted event where everything is free and easy and we just go down to have fun. of course, this is just my own opinion.. not saying attracting public is wrong ok?

yeah, agree with you starfirez! A star party ( i felt) should be one which we can try to involve as many people (espc people who know nothing about astronomy) as possible and pretty much, people are always attracted to crowds , so yups, attracting the public aint wrong at all ! :)

hmm.... a word of caution. Few days ago when I was observing at the reservoir, I was disrupted by a bunch of PUB guys, they ask wat I was doing, in a veri suspicious manner . :? Thus we must be careful in terms of crowd control and dismissing the suspicion of the non astronomy ppls. But some ppl did stop and take a look through the scope.

maybe they just wanna check that you're not carrying out any dangerous activities :P.. considering that everyone is stepping up security everywhere now, person with huge bulky equipment in the middle of a dark place can arouse some suspicion.. but if we have an official star party with proper permits and all then it won't be a problem anymore lah..

i KNOW this is a small contribution but I'm from SP and I know that any funding given is very very small.

Normally not enough for anything proper. Oh and they can be difficult people. But that was quite awhile ago though. Don't know if the attitude's still the same

K, just my 2 cents.
