Hi all,
Finally got a clear night after a month! Got this image of Orion a couple of nights ago. It's an old favourite revisited. Since it's a relatively bright object I didn't have to histogram stretch the image too much - as a result the image is much smoother.
The trapezium region was imaged using shorter exposures and then composited in. Used Luminance Layering technique to improve colour saturation.
Have trained PEC on my GPD and now going up to 90s individual exposures. Some star trailing still evident. Due to bright skies here and even with the LPR filter, I'm using up about half the lattitude of the 12bits in the RAW files. So there may not be any benefit in going for even longer exposures, but will also experiment with lower ISO settings (currently 800).
Good luck with Astrofest - will be there at some time, but we have visitors so uncertain...

heh heh... looking at it "upside down"..it looks more like the Eagle Nebula, right? BTW, how come it does not have the usual pink/purple colour in the centre...is it due to filtering? nice shot nonetheless....

Thanks, Rich,
Colour is pretty subjective. After all in the eyepiece it all looks green! The light, washed out colour in the image is due to the brightness of this region compared to the faint bits of nebulosity which I also wanted to show. I would have expected green O III radiation to be apparent (O III is passed by the LPR filter), but it's not... perhaps swamped by red Ha.
What colours are the trapezium region? I've processed the set of short exposure frames to show colours there. Here they are. Looks like a mix of red Ha and blue reflected starlight - lots of dark dust here as well.

yup...thanks for the nice images.
first time I was able to relate the relative position of the trapezium in M42. I usually see the trapezium or M42 by themselves which really did not indicate their relationship...cool!

Some questions
Wow, thats breath-taking!
May I ask, when and where did you take that image and how long was the exposure and the f-ratio? I am interested to know.
Thank you very much for sharing this image.
