Light pollution in Singapore is indeed a major problem for astronomers in Singapore. Does anyone have any ideas on this problem or any suggestions?
We could band together to come up with some initiatives to help reduce the extent of this problem. By reducing light pollution, we can also help to conserve electricity and the amount of energy expended; a win-win situation for Singapore and the small minority of astronomers.

Well actually, that's one of the misconceptions of lighting. It is possible to light areas for safety AND be more efficient in the process so that energy is saved AND light pollution reduced. Several articles have been written about this and they do sem to make sense. I think the big problem is the cost of retrofitting so many poorly designed lighting fixtures!A 5 YeaR Old wrote:well, good idea, but the safety of people will be reduced due to reduced lighting.

I agree what kohjb said... it just bad design of lighting.
If streetlight really can prevent crime, there won't be any crime in broad daylight... right?? Streetlight actually give a false sense of security and making people to walk in a well lighted, but remote area thinking they are safe... hee hee

just need to use a different housing for the light bulb. Use those that make the light shine downwards. More efficient. The ones that we have shine all over the place....wasting light shining upwards only.weixing wrote:Hi,

we should definitely start an awareness campaign about wasted light going up. we should also work together with some architects and artists on how best to light towers, buildings, art works that use billions of watts, but mostly pointed up!
we can have talks, posters, astro photo contests, public viewing nights all across singapore, etc...
we can start in our own communities or at least communities where we do our activities.
what do you think ? its a big undertaking...
