Vin, just curious, do you know the cheapest way (e.g. by sea) to ship a 14X14X60 inches, 22lbs package from US? vpost charges about $250 + shipping to their US address.

I got a 8" UHTC LX90 for about USD1100, had it supercharged by Dr Clay. I subsequently picked up a DSI and Celestron Neximage, so looking forward to some astroimaging and of course I'll be needing lots of advice from members of this forum :)

I looked at some other options... USPS didn't accept the package because of its size, and I wasn't prepared to let the scope sit on a ship for 1-2 mths... so in my haste to get the scope shipped (am leaving the US in a few days) I picked Fedex. But out of curiosity, what would have been a better option?

You don't have to buy that from US. If you count in the supercharging cost, domestic shipping, Fed ex shipping......you could possibly buy a new one "nearby".

Maybe Vpost could have been cheaper. I shipped a 8" newtonian and a GOTO mount for about SGD$170

Honestly, if I have to pay USD300 for shipping, I would have think of something else. That amount can buy me another small refractor!

By the way, I have checked with telescopes.com, a LX90 Fedex charges from them to Singapore is USD$210.80 (4-5 days). Not sure why you are being quoted USD300

Use sea freight from US la. For your package, it's around US$45.

Only thing is..you need to wait at least 6 weeks.

That's only about 4 weeks more than Vpost. Problem with Vpost is that sometimes the miss the Friday dateline, and by the time they tell you that they received your parcel and want your payment, that's another 2 weeks gone.

Definitely... when I bought the scope, I didn't factor in a lot of stuff, esp shipping. When I got it at its original price, I thought it was a great deal, but when everything is added up, yup, I could have bought a better scope or saved a lot if I had been wiser. Oh well... I just hope the money is well-spent!

Understand that haste to get your scope asap... Ok lah, the shipping is not exorbitant and shipping via Fedex gives better peace of mind too. :) Do tell us about ur first-light experience.

Never mind my fren...everyone in astro will have such experiences once in a while....

Next time, you will know better of what to do.

Meanwhile, just enjoy your scope once it's here. I had that scope before....it's a very good scope.

I agree with VinSnr. True enough, your LX90 cost would include the telescope, supercharging, shipment from store to Dr Clay, shipment to Singapore from Dr Clay, and plus all the handling+ GST at the custom. Have you calculate the total cost of the scope?

Me too go thru all these hassle..buying a ETX125, Dr Clay supercharge but still my scope comes with a motor error, then comes the motor driver burnt, worse no warranty. Probably my bad luck. What I meant is especially Meade telescope... yes I agee with VinSnr again, get from somewhere near  . For example, I was quoted US$3750 for a 10" UHTC LX200GPS-SMT Shipped to my house with foreign distributor warranty. OPT list price for similar item is US$3234 w/o shipping and Singapore GST... (Anyway... there's no way in avoiding the 5% GST, do we?? )

That's my US$1500 ETX125 lesson.... my 2 cents worth.....
