Shingletown Star Party

Post by acc »

Attended the shingletown star party in Northern California last weekend. Drove a total of 1200km/12hours round-trip and boy was that tiring!!!! The skies more than made up for it though. The milky way was juz brilliant so I had a ball of a time. Some pics here http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/acchien@s ... DBGyrDrAlX.

Juz an hour from the observing site is Lassen Volcanic Park. At an elevation of 8000ft, there is still plenty of snow even though its now summer. Some steam vents could be seen. Fabulous way to top off an observing trip :)

cheers

600KM will only get you to Ipoh. That is also very far.
You are a hard core die hard astroman.

Based on altitude of 8000ft (2424M above sea level) the temperature will drop almost 24~25deg C.(Every 100m the temp will drop one deg C)
That is reason you can see snow on mountian in summer.
Whoa!It must be wonderful to be there. 8)
Bring back memory of my backpacker trip to Europe and China.

Actually now quite tied down with work and can't really afford the time to write a long report. Very briefly, the sky was so dark the spiral arms of the whirlpool galaxy was easy to spot with direct vision on my 10" dob + 14mm UWA. With a 35mm Pan + OIII filter, the veil shows lots of delicate detail. And the ring nebula, besides the obvious donut-shape, was showing a faint elliptical outer shell. Fabulous :)
