Ob site at Lim Chu Kang

Post by rlow »

On friday 15 Jul 05, David Lian brought me along to 'recce' for new ob site at Lim Chu Kang. We found two possible location on Jalan Bahtera which leads to the Boy Scout Camp and Camp Christine. Before reaching the Boy Scout Camp, it is possible to ob on the road as there are no street lights and hardly any car passes through. However it is not a paved road, mosquitoes are abundent, and trees may partially block on both sides of the road. The end of this road terminates at the shoreline and there is a unmanned police post. Walking past the post, we set up David's C8 on the shore and bino-viewed on the 1st quarter moon and jupiter. There is a good view of the northern sky but the south sky is blocked up to 45 deg. However the ground is uneven and there are some lights coming from the boats berthed on the water. There are also mosquitoes though the mosquito coils did help somehow. Generally, David and I agreed that we still prefer the Tuas site as compared to this place.

Hi,
I think I know where that place is... been there last year during our (clement goh, John Teh and me) Singapore site survey :P :P :P

Anyway, I don't recommend the road, because there is actually quite a number of vehicle (mostly motorcycle) passing by at weekend (may be not friday night) night... these are the people that goes fishing at the shore where the police post is. May be quite dangerous (road is quite narrow) and not very healthy for the scope... a lot of dust and possible of small stone flying around if vehicle pass by... :P

As for the shore, most guy went there for fishing normally will bring along their "spot light" making the area very bright.

May be you like to check out Lim Chu Kang Lane 1 (I think so) near that area... The site ground is make of concrete (I think previously a house was on the site) and have a good all around view of the sky. The only problem is that the street lamp beside the site was already on... that why we didn't actually went there for observation. But thinking about it, there are a few position on the site that may still be usable... as a few tree actually block the light when on that position. Anyway, had not been there since the street light was on which was last year, so not quite sure what is the current status. If you are interested, ask David lian to contact John Teh for direction... he is the one that bring us there.

Have a nice day.

Actually, for the brave at heart, a cemetry is one of the best locations:

1. No one goes there at night.
2. No street lamps or houses nearby to interfere.
3. Grass is short and there are concrete areas + tar road.

However, watch out for a few things:

1. Don't set your scope near a fresh grave - the methane gas may light up and ruin your photo shots!
2. Make sure you drive - no taxi will pick you up from that location.
3. Packs of stray dogs around (usually 10-20 dogs) - make sure you go in groups to avoid being attacked by them for invading their territory.
4. Be prepared to explain to the police who are patrolling that area.

Cheers!

Yeah, I remember Clement said that he had to wait for a night when the street lamp is not on... David and I went to check out that lane but the lamp is lit.

Also look out for St Elmo's Fire, an unearthly glow of florescence that is actually a natural phenomenon.

Anyway the Lim Chu Kang ob site is worth some consideration if one needs to find some object near the northern horizon.

If you are thinking of camping and stargazing, maybe you can try changi point or pulau ubin.

ubin is barely acceptable la. i rather go tuas to ob than to go ubin. but not really realistic to camp at tuas.

anyway, the location that weixing mention. i have been there before and roughly know how to get there. the problem is, that place seems to be cursed or something. i have not seen a single star there despite 2 attempts.
