New Scope Curse

Post by siahheng »

Hi, Just bought a new Celestron 8"CPC and was delivered yesterday. Cancelled all appts in the hope of enjoying my new scope. Alas, got hit by new scope curse - cloudy and drizzle all nite. Got up at 6am but still no joy.

This morning, witnessed a road traffic accident. I quickly gave assistance and provided my details to be witness for the poor taxi driver. Hopefully that will earn me enough good karma to break the curse.

Still hoping for clear skies....

[glow=red]advice for other newbies buying first scope, get your scope delivered on day when you are busy and not using scope... then it won't be so painful[/glow]

Hi, on the first night, no chance to use scope because of rain and clouds. On the second night, only one quadrant of sky was free of clouds but had to try the scope anyway.

On the first attempt at Skyalign, it took 15 minutes for the GPS to register my position (too cloudy probably). The first skyalign failed. The stars where all in the same quadrant. Waited for 30 min before more stars were visible. This time it worked. The GOTO feature is really great. For an newbie like me with no scope experience, these were some of the first stars I saw: M31, M32, M110, NGC253, Eta Cas, Almach, Sigma Cas.

It was absolutely fantastic. Like CC says, "we do it all night long" but unfortunately gotta work and earn a living, had to stop at 1 am.

Jingguo - i have no experience with other scopes, so cannot compare. Happy to bring my scope to the next star party... :D

Hi Siah Heng,

Glad you are enjoying your scope. If you get a chance, check out the double cluster in Cassiopeia. One of my all-time favourites. However, you are advised to use the focal reducer on your SCT.

Hi Kay Heem

I did some reading up and found the Eta Cas and Sigma Cas I mentioned actually belong to the Cassoppeia constellation.

Cheers
