I'm not a die hard enthusiast, ... is the cheap telescope selling in Carrefour enough for me to see Mars n other big object in the sky?
thanks
cheap telescope
If you are only curious and not a die-hard enthusiast, join any observing group and view thru other bigger n better scopes for free!
Save the $50-60 you would have spent, and get a good bino for about $150. Alternatively, spend the money on a round of drinks for the telescope owners that let you have a peep thru their scope. :-P
You will be disappointed with the Carrefour scope on mars.

Is it for yourself or your child? By the way, there is a good article in the issue of Sky & Telescope magazine on beginner scopes recommendations.
Cheers!

Re: cheap telescope
I've seen those at Carrefour @ Plaza Singapura. Think they're far too low-end to see anything closeup. The magnification sucks! :roll:alex76 wrote:I'm not a die hard enthusiast, ... is the cheap telescope selling in Carrefour enough for me to see Mars n other big object in the sky?

Well, these cheap scopes are usually not worth considering for astronomical observation as they are basically toys for children. They usually come with cheap plastic objective lens, wobbly mount/tripod, terrible eyepieces and a cheap barlow to give you 500x of useless magnification. Yes, you can get a view of the brighter objects Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, some star clusters etc, but the image pales in comparison to a proper standard telescope.
For binoculars, I would recommend the Minolta Activa Series 7x35, 8x40 etc which are discontinued but some stocks are still available. The optical and built quality are excellent, and they are value-for-money at $150 or less.
