Megrez 80SD Semi-APO scope

Post by Airconvent »

Regarding the special sale by McGill, anyone has any personal experiences or comment on this scope? 2" diagonal and all!
I understand it has been discontinued which leaves me wondering why they did so. how would this compare with my ex Orion ED80?
that scope is a great piece of glass for the price but I found it too long and I am quite bad in star hopping but this Megrez deal seems pretty good , so fingers itchy again...
only fear is colour...I remember seeing through Morton's old Megrez 80 but did not like the colour at all...

Better try first. For not much more money, you can get WO ZSFD APO.
Btw, your (ex) ED80 has Ohara's FPL-53 glass, it's a real APO.

Or better still Rich get some nice premium, wide-field eps for use with your existing scope(s) :)

But heheh the ZSFD is very very nice indeed.

Rich 1, maybe you can also consider getting the new WO 66SD apo with 2-speed microfocuser for probably about the same price range.

ED80 in the Vixen body (ED80Sf) is also a better deal than the Orion one. But the size is the same.

wah arief....your "for not much more money" comes to over S$1000 more...
i think the closest apo would have been the wo66. wished it comes in the same body as the Tak FS60....I do love lean, slim and short bodies for super portability!

anyone can tell what is the main difference between the zenithstar and megrez lines?

hi rlow,
the 66mm range comes in 2 flavours...an ED Semi-APO Doublet and a Flourite Triplet APO. Its the "semi-apo" that is in the same price range. I understand the semi apo is still basically an achromat with better than average correction?

Hi,

It's got 3 flavours... The 3 flavours are the ZenithStar 66 Petzval ED Semi-APO, Zenisthar 66 Triplet ED APO and ZenithStar SD DOUBLET APO.
Its the "semi-apo" that is in the same price range.
The one in the same price range one is the ZenithStar SD DOUBLET APO: http://www.mcgill.com.sg/shop/product_i ... 860ba42d18

Hi Richard,

I have the ZS 66 ED APO if you want to try out. When I got it the price is in the same range as 80 SD Semi-APO (as advertised, not special Singastro price).

Cheers!
